Wee Beasties

I'm sorry to say this will be my last post for a while. I'll be busy on some other stuff over the next few months, so to be fair, rather than slow the lads down I'm going to step back and let them at it. Hopefully I can drop by every so often with a sketch. Otherwise, we get to sit back and enjoy Rob and Cormac battle it out. The best is yet to come with these lads and I'm looking forward to watching their progression. It won't be long now 'till we can pick something off the stands with their names on it.

Monday: Feed me... Brains!

'Nother quick one. Zombie's are great because you can combine them with anything. Like, alien-zombie or ninja-zombie or even treble things up, like samurai-robot-zombie. And the reasons for being a zombie can be wide-ranging as well. Like, mad scientist, "rage virus", necromancer, indigestion, the list goes on. This one here's just a regular zombie, awoken by a killer beat and an irresistible bass line.

Monday: Red Rocket 7

I won't get the inks finished tonight so for those of you who check the blog in the morning (Iknow who you are) and for those who like continuity (you know who you are) here is Mike Allred's Red Rocket 7.

I'm trying to work on my process for bringing an image from the concept stage in my head (that's where baby concepts come from) to finished inks on paper (that's where grown-up concepts live), with bells and whistles, in as fast a time as possible. It's slow going since a Sunday night is really the only time I get to try this stuff out, but I'm sure I'll figure something out eventually.

Eric Canete (who blew me away when I first saw his art on Cybernary 2.0) has a great routine going over on his blog where he'll do his best in 90 minutes and call it a day after that (of course a background in animation helps. You animators ).

Almost forgot. We're gonna go with a 'Spiderman Villains' theme this week. Carey, if you please, can you get the ball rolling with Venom for no later that Wednesday morning :)

Sorry for the delay on this guys, I'm having internet problems at home at the moment.

This week I'm getting back to basics: putting the sketch back into SketchPaddys, if you will. Here's Batman.

Mr Carey, as you know, your mission for today should you choose to accept it is to draw the Engineer from The Authority.

Monday: The Lion from Oz

The football image never happened so instead you get Zealot. A very angry, pointy Zealot. Grrrrr.

Carey, I want you to draw the Pink Panther. Haaahhaahaha! But if anyone posts a different suggestion that you like, you can choose that instead. Adios.

Monday: Madness

Probably the nicest bloke you could ever meet dressed in a full body suit walking down the street. But if you mess with him, he's liable to dig out one of your eyeballs and eat it! He's mad.

Hopefully this week's sketch makes up for last week. Mike Allred, the creator of Madman, makes really cool comics so check him out.

Roberto Carey-vagio, you sir are charged with drawing Hellboy. Knock us out!

I was away for the weekend so here's a sketch from my sketchbook that could, one day, look like Madman.

Monday: Death's Head II

I thought I'd read up on Death's Head II and see what his backstory was about. I've always loved the design of this character, mainly because of how Salvador Larroca and Liam Sharp would draw him, so I was curious if his story was any good. Several wiki's later... and this guy must have one of the most convoluted origins in the history of comics, involving the Transformers, Doctor Who, and the Fantastic Four, just to mention a few. Anyway, here he is.

Rob, you've got a choice this week. I saw Star Trek yesterday and the G.I. Joe trailer was on, so I wanna see either Snake Eyes or Storm Shadow.

Monday: Sagat

Monday: Meeow

Here it is. Better late than never.

I'd appreciate some feedback on this one guys, if you have a minute, particularly the anatomy and scale and stuff. I can't tell what it looks like at this stage.

Ok, Carey, your up. I want to see THOR for Wednesday. Olivier Coipel did a short but great run on Thor a while back, with J. Michael Straczynski, and it looked fantastic. What a penciller.

So, no pressure at all.

Monday: Iron Man

Welcome to Sketch Paddys, the weekly sketch blog of aspiring comics artists Cormac Hughes, Robert Carey and myself.

Taking our lead from the guys over at Eclectic Micks, we've decided to post a sketch every week. I'll post on Mondays, Rob will post on Wednesdays and Cormac will post on Fridays.

Here's the twist: on the day I post my sketch, I'll challenge Rob to draw a subject of my choosing. When Rob posts on Wednesday he'll decide what Cormac is drawing... and on Friday Cormac will set the subject of my sketch. That's the plan anyway.

To get the ball rolling, the lads asked me to draw Iron Man.

So, let the games begin. Rob, you're mission for Wednesday, should you choose to accept it, is 'Robocop'. From Iron Man to Robocop... it seemed a like a logical step. Enjoy.
